How Secure Is Your Credit Card Online?
Posted by admin on May 24th, 2011
There are few things as convenient as shopping online. It is typically simple and you can do it from the comfort of your own home. The variety of vendors and products is vast. The best part is you can shop smart by comparing products and finding the best price available. Pay with a credit card, and you don’t have to worry about crowds, the weather, traveling or finding the time to squeeze in a shopping trip.
But how secure is your credit card online? The news is filled every day with stories of identity theft and of criminals hijacking credit card numbers and causing some major problems for the credit card holders. It is true that millions of dollars or more are stolen in online transactions, but it is also true credit card security has evolved over the years and it is safer now than it ever has been as long as you keep in mind security is ultimately your responsibility.
There are a few precautions you can take yourself to make sure your credit cards is as secure online as you can make it. This includes keeping your virus and malware software up-to-date and make sure you run it regularly. Make sure your wireless connection is secure, and never give out your account information, password or PIN number in an email. No credit card company or lender will ask for that kind of information through an email anyway, and someone who does definitely means you ill.
When shopping or conducting business online, makes sure you know with whom you are doing business, exactly what you’re buying and what it will cost. Purchases are covered by the Fair Credit legislation, in which you can dispute charges under certain circumstances. Again, don’t send personal information through email - it’s not secure. Look for a little padlock icon on the site or on the address bar for the address to read “https“. The “s” stands for secure.
The credit card companies are doing their part by enhancing online credit security for your cards. Implementing various verification services that may require more steps on your part ultimately makes the whole online experience much safer. Nothing is foolproof, but generally speaking it is secure to use your credit card online as long as you follow a few safety precautions.
